Gear box swap question
Matt_H:
I have a C reg landrover with a 200 tdi engine, it has as far as I know the original LT77 and LT230 which was the lowest ratio transfer box (1.667?)
I'd like to swap it for a higher ratio, but whilst I'm at it why not change the gearbox as well as it must be getting quite old right now.
Can I simply swap the LT77 for an R380? Are any mods needed? Is there any point in looking at LT85 santana boxes (these seem quite cheap second hand)
Of course if anyone wants to swap a transfer box for a 150k miler low ratio, please do get in touch!

Remember High Ratio=low gearing. Honest.
Even Land Rover don't know that.Well their writers don't.
Xtremeteam:
to fot an R380 you either need the right box thats the same size as the lt77 thats coming out (hens teeth) or you have to make it fit as the bellhousing is a long un,
the LT85 santana split case is the V8 box which is AFAIK unbreakable apart from the bearings going noisy, dont think it will fit behind the tdi as that have a long bellhousing aswell

So is an R380 off a defender not going to fit then? Did the 300tdi engine sit totally differently to the 200tdi?
Maybe just to replace like for like then but to grab a later LT230 with the next ratio along.

Xtremeteam:
the 300 sits right forward so the timing casing is above the steering box,
where as the 200 sits right back, thats why the r380 normally comes with a long bellhousing so the box is the same for the discos & defenders (basically)
