V8MoneyPit:
Just replaced a CV joint last night. By the time I had finished, it was dark and I was working by torchlight. Got the stub axle, hub, that 5 bolt splined thing ( ) and the caliper all mounted back on. Then I turned round to see the 'mud shield' sat on the drive... argghh!

It's not the main disc shield, just the ring that fits under the six stub axle bolts. Just how critical is this? I guess it partially fills the gap between the axle and the inside diameter of the disc. It certainly isn't crucial to driving the car, but is it really important to keep mud out?

I could take it all apart again, but I am reluctant to do so. I could always call it weight saving  :D

muddyweb:
That helps keep the grit and mud away from the inner bearing...   I'll let you decide how important you think it is :-)

V8MoneyPit:
Hmm... that's what I thought. Oh well, all off again tonight.... such joy  :(

V8MoneyPit:
Got it all apart again and put the shield back on. All is well in the CV department. Now the water pumps has started leaking. One thing after another  :(

davidlandy:
