I think Dalton was better than the reviews he got
Number one (for SWMBO) was Pierce Brosnan, as he was suave enough, handsome, active & a good actor
I'd liked to have seen Colin Salmon(?) as Bond, or Hugh Jackman (but is he too closely linked to 'Wolverine' now??)
Vigor Mortensson (Aragorn in 'Lord Of The Rings') would work well as he's got the intensity
