steering drop arm

am doing this job myslef this weekend. forgive my lack of technical language, but i have been informed there is a steel 'ring' that is quite difficult to remove from the drop arm. I was advised to put the arm in a vice and whack it with something suitable, but it's a tight fit and there's not much material visible to whack  :) .

Can you think what i'll need to get enough of a whack?

I used a dremel to cut the housing a little and get access to the race as it was badly worn away.
