Loud banging from front

(1/3) > >>

Sheddy:
The vehicle is a disco, V8 manual 1991.

I had a lot of fun in a mud hole a couple of weeks ago and knocked out the rear diff.  I drove it home in diff-lock, no problems and had a new(2nd hand) rear diff fitted.

After it was done, I founfd thet there was a bit of a popping noise coming from the front axle when turning left.  This was very intermittant, it didn't happen every time.    Because it was intermittenet I didn't worry about it too much but the pop became a bang followed by a grinding noise.  I stopped to have a look underneath but could see nowt wrong.  I got back in to move the Disco to a safer place and the grinding noise hastopped so I continued driving but at a very sedate pace.  The bang happaned a couple more times on the way home, followed by the grinding which I found dissapeared when the clutch was depressed.  The bang only happened on left hand turns/bends and seemed to come from the front off-side of the Disco.

I suspected the CV joint so tonight I stripped it.  It all seems to be in good order, no visible cracks and it moves freely.  So I stripped out the nearside and it is the same, seemingly in good order.

I'm now stuck!  Could it be the diff?  Could the transmission be stuck in diff-lock? (the light is out but I've heard of this happening)

any ideas?  All advice appreciated.

well i would have said cv at first but seeing as you have stripped them out  :? could the splines in the halfshafts be worn and jumping about in the diff end?

denviks:
i know it sounds daft but have you checked the front bearings.....mine did the bang and then cleared....apparently this was them siezing and the freeing off again

Sheddy:
I've pulled the shafts out and they look fine too.  What do you reckon .... diff out and have a look?

Sheddy:
Denvics .... nice suggestion, I'll go have a look!
