mines got a rattle from in the exhaust i think a baffle or something is loose

This may sound odd, but check the Alternator, I had a similar rattling and it sounded like it was underneath inside the bell housing, but it was the alternator disintegrating.

The rattle also stopped while in park, which was weird, but not for long, soon it was rattling all the time, and got decidedly worse.

deranged rover:
It could be any of the ancillaries, whilst in park the load is removed from them, then when selecting a gear the load returns and thus the rattle. It could be a small bearing coming to end of its life or even something stuck to or coming off of a pulleywheel or a belt starting to delaminate leaving an unstuck piece to hit somethng. Best bet is to get someone to put it into gear when you have your head under the bonnet. Just make sure the handbrake is on!
