Hello - just a question about my defender 110 td5 SW (2000) 34k
getting a rattle/ clunk from under the car, over flat or over bumps, everything under the car seems ok- also slight rattle when in gear  clutch in,
also when i turn engine off, can hear loud rattle.can it realy be time for new flywheel and clutch £1000 :cry: javascript:emoticon(':cry:')

Try checking all the way along the exhaust system. See if its touching anywhere (or is very close to anything). Could be that :?

Not sure about on a Defender, but the Disco TD5 has a flexible bit in the exhaust (on the downpipe) and this is prone to breaking up internally.
I know, mine did it and produced the rattle you describe when switching off.
The way to test it is to get underneath and give the bottom of the downpipe a good bash with your fist.
