what to do
« on: July 08, 2006, 13:01:56 »
Going for some underbody protection on my 82 rrc so it will be paddocks metel steering guard qt diff sliders and tank guard. Thanks not a problem. Now me thinking hight at the moment its standard heavy duty springs all round with no lift. But i do tow a caravan for weekends away etc. so wondering its either bite the bullet and body lift so i can get some big feet on her or i have hear that police spec springs lift it up abit without the need for too much hard work and money. only thinking of a 1 to 1.5 inch lift. as i still need to get in her when my back is playing up. so has anyone got police spec springs on there rr and does it make a differance to the hight.
Thanks

DIESEL uses POLICE SPEC spings with monro gas struts at the rear and standard britpart ones at the front(due to no money at the time).if you look in http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/The%20Fat%20Controller/gallery/welcome/0/7bf77726f78b5b96cc172d44c0bad6c0.jpg/ you will see that he sits higher than DUCK.DIESEL shod with 31x10.5x15's while DUCK wears 235/70h16's.the main idea for fitting the springs was to reduce the body role

ok so me thinking as it has a heavy diesel lump in front put the rear heavy duty springs on the front and police spec on the rear. that way it should stay level. will have to look at were to get some

I'm not sure the front and rear springs are interchangeable :?:
When I put a winch and bumper on my rangie I put Bearmach BA 2104 springs on the front, they were the same height as the standard springs when placed next to one another on the floor but on the RR they give 30mm lift even with the winch etc.
I still have standard height heavy duty on the rear and empty the RR sits level front to back but when I put 4 mud tyres in their rack in the boot the tail dips (headlights point skyward   :D ) so I may try some BA 2102 to combat this.
The ride quality is very good and off road they dont seem to hinder articulation too badly but that may change when I do the rears.
Regards,
Richard.

Thanks for that richard never thought of that so it may be time for another rethink and go for a full set of police spec springs. dont want to go too heavy duty as it will get a bit to uncomfortable on a bumpy road

I had police spec rears all round on mine prior to fitting the 33"s.
I used monroe4x4 gas adventurer shocks and it handled and sat very well.
I had 235/70/16 BFGs on and they had loads of room.
It was a bit stiff but at the time it was purely used on road.

I fitted police spec rear springs to my motor a few months ago after taking SLU off.  Approx 1.5" higher than before and drops very little when towing and also feels a lot more stable (but original springs were NG).

never thought of taking the slu off what sort of weight do you tow as i pull a 1.5 ton caravan. but never thought of taking slu off as i thought it would drop the back end too much

Yes, I fitted them to RRR, Janer tows the 'van with that.  It's a bit rolly polly and nearly as high as Blue and he's got a 2" lift.  Now with the 'van on the back sits down nicely but the steering suffers from the typical lift syndrome with or without the 'van.

I was recomended these by the supplier for towing but I'm dissapionted.  To get the car to handle I've now got to chuck time and money at it or lower it and it is quite capable off-road even on road tyres so Jane wants to keep it as-is.

All I can say is I don't know how the police managed to drive them so bl**dy fast!

Must depend on individual motors.  Mine used to sit with tyres in arches unloaded (as said before springs were NG) but used to come up once moving ,so presume SLU was working OK.  Since fitting HD springs towing is a much better experience "what van" but haven't had out for a decent run yet.

Now runs unloaded about 0.5 inch higher on back end compared to front so there is approx 2" between top of tyre (205x 16) and wheel arch and there is MUCH less roll around corners than before.
