Ignition Amplifier?

i got that figure out of the haynes manual, and off the plate on the right hand bank, the haynes manual actually said 2deg BTDC +/- 1deg.  I even tried setting it about 2 deg after TDC and it idled like a bag of s**t!

Am i miss interpreting what the manual says?
