transfer box leaking info needed plz
condrax:
Hi
I have an oil leak from the rear prop oil seal on my transfer box on my disco 200tdi
I was wondering if I should change the bearing while I was in there?
If so what is the best way to get the old bearing out.is it a pig to get out?
i am hoping to try and do this with the transfer box still on the car. is ths even possible?
Any advice would be appreciated: D

Not sure how difficult it is to get out but I would say that if the bearing aint showing signs of wear... I'd leave it. Not that I'm an expert you understand!
I saw a piccy recently of a home made slide hammer... basically a legth of steel rod that locates in the bearing... with a weight round the handle. Slide the weight up the handle to rear of vehicle... and bob is yer auntie.... allegedly!
Not sure if my info has helped... but good luck anyway.

thx for advice.
took it apart today and found the problem 8) the last person to change the oil seal used the wrong 1  so as the bearing looked ok left it alone
put the proper seal in and cured my leak :D

Congratulations!
Always a relief when the problem is fixed and there are no extra bits left over!
... you don't have any bits left over do you....?!

hehe i have 4 prop bolts left over
but i had to cut 1 off and the other 3 where pretty chewed up glad i ordered them when i got the oil seal
when i went in to land rover main dealer it took 3 attempts to get the right seal as they dont seem to be too good at putting things in the right bins
glad i have a parts book to keep a check on them from now on
cheers
