slow starter when warm

(1/2) > >>

feyaz:
hi, my starter on my 3.9 1989 rangie turn over very slowly when warm/hot, sometimes turning over so slowly and jerky I can count revolutions.

is it a common problem, possibly a new starter, or just loose connections? if loose connections then am I looking anywhere but the obvious?

thanks in advance!

suggs:
mind did that when the timing was a bit out, felt like it had a flat battery.

feyaz:
timing? ignition timing?

might be stupid question, but I've just got this range after having a pretty maintance free cavalier v6.

suggs:
yeah thats it has to be set with a timing gun, mine was a bit out after removing then replacing the distributer the car would turn over very slowly like the battery was flat, re-set the timing and problem instantly solved might be worth a go.

may just be a case of the starter being a bit sticky, may need to remove it and give it a grease up and check any connections you can see, are you sure the battery is fully charging? make sure the alternator connection is ok otherwise the battery will slowly drain.

if your new to land Rovers get used to things like this happening  its part of there charm..they can be a love hate relationship

hi, I will check the timing, but I was a bit confused by the timing issue since it only really struggle to start when hot. by stuggle to start I mean turning over very slow.

I have tried the jump leads to the starter, also jump starting with my other car and charging battery. no change

I believe it could be the starter itself, so will remove and clean up, otherwise I'll get another one. I have been search for new one on the net they show "geared" starters to make it turn over faster, and what I believe are standard, if I  do need a new starter which one do I go for considering the quicker starter is 3-4 time the price.

thanks
