BIG Engine..!!!

<< < (2/2)

Paul:
Ok, So it's not as big as that one,
But it's the largest one I've seen and
boy does it make a right noise when
it's ticking over...

I had the pleasure of seeing one of them in build on a recent trip to Japan and they are HUGE. It's got a 2.5m stroke and 98cm bore. The air charger alone is bigger than my garage and it does a whopping 120 rpm. They don't use a gearbox, just a direct coupling to the prop. IIRC it stood about 40ft high and weighed about 2000 tonnes.

From what I could understand it was destined for some super tanker that 'another part of the buisness' was building.

I never found out how they got it out the building, though. They only had a 500t crane............

It's alledged to be the most fuel efficient, oil burning prime-mover available, but I'll be sticking to me 300tdi, I feel......

Cheers

Me too, Couldn't afford a service on one of them,
How many gallons of oil would that take...?
