Cheapest roofrack type thingy! :D
spy:
I need to be able to stick a small sailing dinghy on the roof of the disco. Whats the cheapest option? Can I buy just cheap bars from anywhere (like the halfords type, gutter mounts) that are wide and tall enough for a disco?
What about cheap suppliers of new roof racks? Even better would be someone with something to sell?? :D
As per usual I havent got a load of cash so expensive :( new ones are out of the question...
Cheers,
Mike

Paddock do a self assembly half rack and access ladder for a good price.
Mine holds a Sevylor two man inflatable fishing dinghy ok. Just tie it down with rachet straps and rope the nose down to the a-bar. No probs - get some funny looks driving around with it on the roof though

£120 for a 4' one seems to be the only option from paddocks. Thing is I really shouldnt have bought the boat, if swmbo finds out I had to buy a £120 roof rack as well (in middle of buying 1st house, baby on way) I will get strung up! :D:D
Cheers anyway tho...

Alternatively, a fishing mate of mine made up a 'custom' support for his rigid hull dinghy. Simply bolted four uprights to the gutter, fitted a couple of cross braces and straps the dinghy down to that. Works a treat and cost a mornings work in the garage with the saw and welder.
Problem is getting the dinghy up there in the first place. Even with a fibreglass hull it weighs half a ton and takes at least two tall guys to get it up there, then there's the problem of using the ratchet straps at land rover roof height. You really need an access ladder as well. Thats why I went for an inflatable, I can do all that without help, plus I'm only 5'-6" on a good day
Good luck mate, enjoy your sailing . . . . even swmbo might end up enjoying it.

SWMBO - sailing? hahaha
Its only a laser dinghy, they dont weight that much and I usually go sailing with a mate who also has a laser so we will manage it between us. He has a trailer but I usually end up towing his for him. Was thinking one on the roof and one on the back would save taking two cars.
I wonder if I can find someone to knock me something up! I had a look at halfords online, it quoted £30 odd quid which sounded like a result. That was untill I mentioned it to the local store who mentioned the £100+ "feet" I need to buy 1st.
Sod that! Thanks for your help :D
