200tdi timing belt jump

Hi all, is it possible that the timing belt on my defender has jumped some teeth when i was marooned in some deep muddy water recently.

I would very much doubt it............but after saying that..........my 300 has jump out and rubbed the front casing causing the belt to snap   .......3 bent push rods and a new belt later.......all ok.
Could be worth just checking the timimg marks.

Right thanks ,am i right in saying to check timing marks i need to take belt cover of or is there a way around this .

Your right.........belt cover off.........you can check crank and fuel pump with the cover on but not the cam.

What is the problem with it ?

A long story really but basically got stuck in some deep muddy water after being pulled out had a few things wrong with car ,turbo ,to much oil on deep stick,noisey engine (top end),oil light flickering on at low revs.
Replaced turbo ,changed oil ,removed sump and cleaned .Started car and lots of smoke low oil pressure and noise still present didnt rev car much due to noise oil pressure so not sure if turbo working should do it is new.

Sounds like more than just a timing belt........not sure what to surgest but check the timing first and go from there.

Could it have breathed some in the engine ??

mine did kinda the same thing after getting stuck in deep water & the oil pump was on its way out,changed the oil pump but not the shells

Did you buy new oil pump ,and can you remember where you got it from ,think i will change mine ,got to start somewhere :(

Range17 - surely you got water in the oil (so dip stick shows oil too high) ran the engine and knackered the oil pump, the pistons and doubtless the turbo. If anything I'd have thought the timing belt would have been most likely to survive!

You may have got water into the injection pump too as it has a breather that can take water and of course mud in.

I think you may have a long and tedious job on there!

Incidentally I'd have thought you'd get an oil pump from any LR dealer/garage but I'd go with your local independent who might also be able to make suggestions of what to tackle.

Well i am slowly stripping it down ,head off next ,i checked the valve clearance and they are all to big so wondering about push rods bent ,i will see when the head off.

sounds very poorly, full rebuild in order if you have got muddy water into the oil.

Dont need to remove the head to check if there bent.

might need to take the head of to get the bent pushrods out though
