Hello,

I have decided to order the Pro Comp ES9000 Spring Lift Kit - (1.5 INCH LIFT) from MM 4x4 for my 97 Disco.

I understand that there are a number of things that people recommend changing at the time of replacing the shocks. Namely the nuts, I see the kit comes with 8 nuts. Are these the ones that people say I should replace? Is there anything else I should order?

Here is a link to the kit I am going to order,

Good Choice. I have just fitted a 2" kit to my 110. (See Picture).

The nuts it comes with are the turret retaining ring nuts. I didnt notice this until i had finished and got some from work.

Its a great kit.

Mine took about 4.5 hours in total. But i am a mechanic, and have all the right tools.

Give everything a good soak of wd-40 the day before you do it.

Also, i found the front brake hoses will be ok, but the rear is now too short.

Hope this helps.

Have you had a look at the +2"kit from Paddocks?
Not only do you get the springs and shocks, but also extended stainless brake lines, extended bump stops, front and rear disslocation cones and heavy duty spring retainers. Just under £370 and free postage.

You will probarbly need to replace the turret retaining rings at the front, and if you go for just the shock and spring kit, make sure you get some heavy duty spring retainers.

Just fitted the Paddocks kit on our Disco and had a day out a Kirton quarry on sunday without any problems, really glad of the disslocaton cones, they really proved their worth, we could hear the springs popping in and out all day!

What you decide to fit depends on what you want from your vehicle and how extreme you want to drive!

Hi most of my order has just arrived from MM4X4 today. I am looking at the blue springs and when i punch in the part numer into google is says they are
"Standard height and increased load carrying capacity".

One of the part numbers from the spings is BS2103 Have a look at the following link.

http://www.4x4store-exeter.co.uk/catalog/The%204x4%20Store%20Dis%20cat/4th_DISCOVERY_for%20web/disco%20web%20gallery/BLUESP.HTM

Now I ordered a 1.5" lift kit and that is what the have charged me for. Am I confused? Why does it say "Standard Height" if i ordered a 1.5" lift?

This is what i ordered

http://www.mm-4x4.com/Shop/springliftkit.htm

Many thanks

You may find the springs give you the lift you require . I don't think you can go wrong by giving them a call in the morning. :)

there is a possibility they will giev the required lift but at the expense of a harsher ride, they do say standard height , increased carrying capacity.

Its the same Kit as i have on mine at the moment.

The springs are about standard length, but slightly stiffer, so the car sits nominall 1.5 to 2 inches higher. Not so good off road, but gives a much better ride on road, despite the increased centre of gravity, also known as the 'round about with a laden roof rack test'.

The Procomp dampers are standard length, so you don't have to worry about brake lines, bumpstops, rear self leveler etc.

If you want lots of axle articulation them this is not the ideal kit, however I have had few worries whalst using it off road (pay and plays/greenlaning). The benitfits off road are increased ground glerence under the tow plate and transphere box/hand brake without spending much money. For what I do there is not much need for anything better except for keeping up with the jones on the 'gettin some flex' topic.

As a final note the ride height increse is a nominal figure as the same springs are used on the 90, RRC and discovery, compared to the tired 20 year old rear springs on mine the 1.5" rear springs gave about a 3" lift. No wonder the tow plate always used to plough.

13 days(!) and counting, I am STILL waiting for my front springs that were supposed to come with the 1.5" lift kit I ordered from MM4X4.

I received most of the kit a few days after ordering but the front springs have STILL not arrived.

So the moral of the story is check with MM4X4 that they have the items in stock before you order or you could be left waiting weeks :!:  Grrrrrr.

Most annoying.

The Procomp dampers are standard length, so you don't have to worry about brake lines, bumpstops, rear self leveler etc.

errr wrong....what difference does the length of the dampers make to anything?
If you move the car up(longer/stiffer springs) the the brake lines are not long enough- for safetys sake spend 30 quid and make sure you dont lose your brakes..thats just not worth the risk!
Second why do you think people sell longer bump stops..is it for 'keeping up with the joneses' as you put it?? No its because the axle is further away from the bump stop...therefore the wheel can travel upwards more which may be further than it should. You can end up with the wheel literally eating the bodywork...and in the process risk breaking cv's or halfshafts - not to mention the nice new shocks which arent designed to be slammed shut by the axle moving up.
I dont think disco have the self leveler i think thats rangeys....

Bully, just to be clear on the point

Using the basic lift kit from MM4x4, the dampers are standard length, the damper mounts are standard, and therefore the the range, upper limit and lower limit of suspension travel remain exactly the same. The springs have no effect (unless they coil bind or pop out) on the limits of suspension travel, just the nominal ride heght within those limits.

If the dampers were different lengths  or mounted differently compared to standard then the range, upper and lower limits of suspension travel would then be changed. Then you would need different brake lines that are not standard length.

On vehciles with revised suspension geometry then extended bumpstops may be required (depends on what exactly has been changed and in what way). My commets about 'keeping up with the joneses' was refering to the amount of axle articulation I actually needed, not weather extended bump stops were needed or not.

As for not having a self lever, I was not aware of that so thanks for pointing that out.

well the kit isnt worth buying then... if the shock is the standard length then its already extended by 2 inches because of the lift....and that means it will allow too much upward travel (bump stops) but not enough downward travel(where you want it) The chances of shock loading the extended shock are alos increased and they dont like it too often.

Do I need to fit anything to my Disco to stop the shocks from being pulled apart when at full articulation? What I mean is, the shocks can only expand to a point, past this point I guess the weight of the car will be forcing the shock apart. Does that make sense? Presumably there is something one needs to fit to make sure that this does not happen.

I wouldnt either , if you had called Paddocks they would have arrived the following day! The shocks are ok at ful extension as they can cope withthe weight of the axle its being closed that kills em.

25 days and counting I would have cancelled it but when the first part of the kit arrived I fitted it because I was told the rest would follow in the next couple of days, So now I have half the kit on my Disco and cant really do much about it. I am told it is a problem with their suppliers. Not much help to me though.

The ProComp Shocks came with standard Nuts, should I change them for the nuts with the plastic ring in them or use a locking compound? Or nothing at all?

I bought a set of 'police spec' springs for RRR and they are supposed to be standard height.  Weell it shot up nearly 2 inches :?  (hey if yours turn out to be standard height, want to swap?).

I'd agree with the coment about the dampers though, if your ride heigh is increased you should have longer dampers too, otherwise your droop travel will be reduced by that magic 1 1/2 inches and I doubt you'll manage to compress the springs down to the bump stops anyway, I can't do with the 2" set on Blue

hi fitted a complete 2" lift kit from mm4x4 to my 98 disco1 300tdi es auto and fitted 265/65/16 goodyear mts and wheel spacers and it looks the nuts, the kit is a good un the ride ok and handling still ok as i drive it like i drove my v8disco 2 and its fine round bends etc. so i dont think you will regret fitting a 1.5" lift cheers mark
