Fuel gauge not working??

I was offroading in my rangie and after I went through some water the fuel gauge went to empty and the engine cut out! I got it going again 5 minutes later but the fuel gauge has remained on empty even when I fill up the tank?? Can anyone solve this mystery?

look at the wires on the n/s of the tank may have just knockd one off.
