TD5 burning its own oil

my friends td5 disco has just been recovered from the motorway after developing a liking for its own oil, i suspect the seal in the turbo has gone so its feeding oil into the engine and burning it, apparently the M4 disappeared in a blue cloud this morning :shock: , but i,m open to any suggestions as to the cause of the problem from those who have worked on td5,s before i go and look at it
it still runs although roughly as its putting out its own smog screen and the guy reported a feeling of loss of power on the hills occasionally, no water in the oil or vice versa and its not blowing its coolant out or pressurising the sump by all acts

any suggestions most welcome

i agree with you turbo seal best way to check is take off the pipe from the turbo to the inlet manifold and run the engine and watch for oil mist

The injector seals can go apparently?
Filling the bore with diesel, which washes down past the piston rings and fills the sump with diesel. This increases the oil level until it gets sucked into the inlet manifold via the breather (giving the impression the turbo has gone).
If the oil level is over-full, check it's not got diesel in it (bit difficult I know).
If you drain oil and refill with fresh oil. Try running it again.

Tip: If it revs up again, put foot hard on brake, drop it into 4th gear and dump the clutch, it'll stall the engine.

i have seen a diesel rev its self to distruction running on its own oil and nothing could stop it

makes a nice noise and spits hot chunks of metal all over the place

i dont think it was actually running on its own oil just consuming it and blowing out smoke but i,ll check for diesel etc in the oil
