Veggie Oil

guardian:
you will have to experiment as every engine runs slightly different on veg oil. i have used it in all our vehicles for years now, some will run almost neat some need a splash of diesel to thin it down a tad, you do not need anything like 50/50 unless it is a cold winter. in my experiance the tdi is the engine that needs slightly more diesel than the others around 20% derv to 80% veg oil, something to do with the injectors.but you will have to try your to start with.
it is taxed exactly the same as ordinary derv there are lots of rules and regs to get bio derv tax and you will never get it, so you save nothing just cleaner for the environment. the cheapest iol is lidl but they ban u from buying it after about 3 trips, so morrisons or sainsburys all sell it for 50p per ltr if you buy the 3 ltr bottles. another tip do not ever use used oil you can buy it for 10 or 15 p per liter but by the time you have messed about with it to clean etc you may as well bought new, plus it never runs as well.
should you convery properly with a heater in your fuel tank you can then run oil neat no trouble, just have a tank to start up and turn off on so to clean injectors with diesel.
you will hear many different things contradicting everything so its difficult if you have never used it, id did my brain in years ago, but when someone gives you advise ask them first if they have ever used it, because still people tell me you cannot use veg oil its a load of rubbish!

fram:
What is the price of bio-diesel compared to the ordinary stuff?
Our nearest supplier is about 15 miles away, and although it would be really nice to help the environment a bit, is it worth the drive to fill up every week or two?

--- Quote from: "johnpirate" ---I run a 50/50 mix in my 200 Tdi Disco and I declare the fuel duty.It normally runs fine but when the temperature drops you have to drop the mix quite dramatically.I was in Holmfirth in March coming home after a party .It had been down below 5 degrees in the night. The Disco had a pronounced stutter coming over the hill had to keep the revs high.
--- End quote ---

How do you pay the tax - this was the bit that made my head go funny and put me off the idea.

Every end of month I get a form off Customs and Excise to fill in the amount I have used .You send a cheque for the duty to be paid by the 15th of the month coming. You ring up and ask to register as a bio fuel producer and user .You get a trader number so if stopped you give the number and you are in the clear.I called into a local garage yesterday talking to him. He runs a 300tdi he asked how mine was on veg as his has stopped on him a couple of times and it takes some getting going. But he thought mine bieng a 200tdi would handle it better as they use a different pump. Plus on a personal note I think the 200 is a tougher engine ..I,ve got the Landrovers for Africa handbook and even Landrover says you can run upto a 300tdi on a mixof 100 parts kerosene to 1 part engine oil.Tough as old boots arnt they .

ian_s:
so the government just beleive what you tell them about how much you use?
so you could tell them you use 5 gallon a month, and really use 50?
wow, trusting arent they.
