Front Halfshaft or CV

I'd go with that Mike, old RR style axles then you want it to be the stub axle, same both sides, easy and cheap to find, no grease to spill changing it with a magnet on a stick. I think the CAM axles Dom bought have a 'fuseable' shaft in their design too but I like your idea of machining them, any pictures?

Only problem with the older CVs with the outer shaft is that they are weaker than some of the other types... so whilst you have an easy outer shaft to change, you are still more likely to break the CV anyway. If you run a weakened outer shaft that will break before the (weaker) CV joint, then you'll be forever changing them !
