Oil filter seal. Grrr.
« on: April 11, 2006, 11:16:12 »
Which genius came up with that design? I had a right mare changing it last night - went on, fired her up... leaks. tightened it up. fired her up. leaks. took it off, put it on again with a load of grease to hold it in place. fired her up. no leaks. ran her for five minutes with a few revs. still no leaks. turned her off and was packing everything away when I heard a trickling sound... leaking. took it off again, dropped new filter into bucket of old oil and old filter. And here's a thing - a new filter covered in oil looks remarkably similar to an old filter covered in oil..

Anyway, think I managed it in the end, but for future reference, will an oil filter holder thing from a ninety or 110 engine fit a series 2.25D so I can use spin on filters in future?

TIA :D

I fitted a 2.5 TD oil filter housing and spin on filter to my 2.25N/A no problems at all jsut needed to get some brass blanking plugs which are the same size as the ones in the top of a 300TDI radiator, cost me 20 squid including the filter and plugs  :D. well it has stopped one leak at least

Just a thought - those blanking plugs - presumeably they're for the oil cooler supply and return? Would they be suitable orifices for oil temp and pressure gauges? The middle bit of my dash is crying out for some clocks!

There is a propper kit to convert to the non messy oil filters, much better than the canister c**p thing that pi**es out everywhere.

Becasue I fitted the turbo version is had to blank off two holes, which i use the brass plugs for, then I have the oil pressure gauge and on mine a transducer measuring oil pressure which goes to a gauge, they just stick out the top of the housing...

Probably made no sense  :?

Thanks Matt
