engine identification help

hi all. just been talking to a mate of mine and he says one of his mates has a series 3 and cant get parts for the engine. i asked him to send me a pic so i could post it up here for you to look at. i know that there are people here that know what they are looking at  :wink:
the series is a A plate 1983...............it suppossed to be a 2286 land rover diesel?


any help would be brill  :D  :D

Looks remarkable similar to the LD400 series sherpa engine i had in my old S3.

Can we have some more pictures?  Can't really tell much from that angle other than it doesn't have the standard air intake and filter arrangement.

looks like a 2.25 pump with a sherpa 2.5 air filter assembly
exactly what parts cant he get for it? and the engine number might help
