--- Quote from: "phoenixmad" ---i had the same problem with mine its the egnition barrel all you have to do is to get a new back bit of the barrel its not where the key goes in its the elctrial bit they dont cost much to by and its a 2 minit job dust write down and take a pick where the wires go
--- End quote ---
I would put my money on ignition too - bottom bit has numbers on the connection which correspond to the following wires -
1.................white/red
2.................brown
3.................white
5..................orange/white
TechnoTurkey:
My series 3 did the same and it was just the wires at the back of the barrel had come loose.

thanks for the help, checked ingition switch that seems ok, BUT the solenoid on the starter seems to be the culprit, massive short when you try to engergize it. all fine with the wire from the switch disconnected. so new starter motor needed.
a new soleniod is "from £120 depending on which one"
a complete starter motor is £75 :?
oh well
