My thoughts would be to go with the pattern on the vehicle shown & keep at least one set of tail-lights up out of the worst of the road-grime.
Plus if you don't have a high-level brake light in the rear door glass, the upper (standard) position keeps brake lights high.

Here's the rear of my Defender if it's any help.

All lights on thre rear except the indicators have LED's fitted.
