200 tdi probs!!
« on: March 22, 2006, 20:50:48 »
boys i need your help!,my 200 tdi defender has an anoying engine problem. the engine starts fine when cold useing glow or not. but as soon as it running its chucking out lots of white/grey smoke, its also missfireing and will not rev up freely. i carn't drive it like this because it wont pull through the gears unless i let it rev high but its a cold engine and i dont like doing this!. if i leave it ticking over for a good 10/15 mins to warm up it will pull but with a bit of smoke and miss.when its warm its ok still not as gud as it gud be?.ive had 200 tdi discos witch have sounded more crisper and responsive. this what ive done so far... ive had the injectors checked, all ok. pump timings cock on. new fuel, air filter. compression is between 350/400psi hot and cold. tappits all ok. glow plug are fine. i can do most jobs myself but cash is a bit tight thats why im loking at the cheaper options first, unless some one gives me a good reason to say, (take the head off) hope some out there can help!! me soz about the spelling, hope the decriptions are ok  cheers wayne

How many miles has it done ?

Could well be a head gasket issue.
Is your compression the same on all cylinders ?
Loosing water ?

Sorry if im stating the obvious - im not so good at this sort of stuff but have changed the head gasket on other cars - all with different symptoms (and all had knackered gaskets/heads).

My current problem on my camper van is the head is cracked in 4 places - but the van was running absolutely fine. There was more grey smoke, it took a few more turns to start up, but other than that it still ran like a dream. The only reason i did anything about it was because i was using a litre of water a day! (But i couldn't see it leaking out anywhere).

Its a royal pain in the ass - but do get the head skimmed. A friend of mine didnt do this and the head ended up cracking when he torqued it up.

Again, sorry if this is all old news to you - but good luck in getting it sorted out.

I agree the symptons point toward a head gasket. If it not then its one of the cylinders or rings.

Not every problem can be solved with duct tape, and it's exactly for those situations we have WD 40

what to do next. head off or book it in a dieset shop and say "fix it" it could cost mega bucks to do but come back running mint. how much is it to get a head skimmed these days?

Head skimming varies from place to place, £50-100 at a guess

Injector pump is a sit down job when asking the price, unless a 2nd hand one comes up, but saying that there are a few probs on the pump that are not as expensive, until its checked out one way or the other, hard to say

How about a coolant test for gases?

From what I've seen of it, it tests for exhaust gases in the coolant

Could be a quicker option and there's no stripping down needed

is the turbo spinning? a knackered turbo would give you smoke and a loss of power, dunno what other symptoms tho
