2.25D smoke on starting

Same here, but as said it clears almost straight away.  I just live with it, don't see it as a big deal.  It'd be nice to have a clean exhaust from starting, but remember not many diesels do, so a bit from a 30+ year old engine isn't a worry point for me.

i would look at the fuel system first aswell, shoulnd cost you much to have your injectors re nozzled. it would make your motor run better aswell.

Miniman:
Mine does but its a cocktail of a few things. Valve stem seals are not a tight fit anymore so whilst the engine is hot and turned off the oil leaks down the valve guide and sits on the closed valves ready for the morning and the valves that are open it just lands on the top of the piston. You got to remember it only takes a drip of oil on top of one piston to do the smoke thing.

Also the injectors can also cause this problem. When you switch off the engine and the injectors are still under pressure the diesel can drip out over night and leave the tops of the pistons wet which also causes smoke.

Do you do greenlaning ? If so when you have left the engine ticking over for a while do you see smoke coming from the exhaust... ?

Do you have a leak of oil from the top of the rocker cover where the breather cap is ?

sounds to me like worn piston rings, which means you get pressure building in the crank case and so it pushes oil out of the only available outlet
