Should I fit gaitors?

(1/3) > >>

Lostboy:
I'm in the process of rebuilding the hub swivels on my 11 year old Disco, because the bearings have worn out. I've no problems with the swivel ball being pitted or corroded or any leaks (I've got the one shot grease in there)

I'm considering the Bailcast gaitors, now would be an ideal time to fit them, but...

Given the vehicle occasionally wades about in muddy ponds, I'm concerned that water that gets into the gaitors will be trapped, accelerating corrosion problems and gaitors might hide a problem with the grease leaking, disguising what could be a nasty issue.

What your thoughts guys and girls?

muddyweb:
You've summed up my thoughts...  I wouldn't fit them...

thermidorthelobster:
I'm with you & Tim on this.

Henry Webster:
No don't do it!

No no no and no.....

Definately not. They will keep the crud in there. They might help if you never went in any mud (they'd stop stones etc hitting the swivel ball and chipping it) but in mud or water they'd trap crud.
