jimthelandyman:
Just failed its MOT on emissions, the garage said it maybe because of my snorkel because it is harder to breathe and therefore it's smoking, do you think that this could be the case?

muddyweb:
I don't think that is likely, but it's easy enough to prove or disprove... just take the pipe off at the filter

jimthelandyman:
good thinking i should tell them that so that they don't charge me for looking around at other stuff if it is the case, cheers.

bezzabsa:
how can a snorkel make it harder for an engine to breathe??? if anything i always thought they made the engine suck air easier?????

It is a longer route for the air to travel down (try breathing through a hose pipe! ) There is potentially some benefit from Safari snorkel types of ram air effect when travelling, but this doesn't apply for the MOT test.

The other potential benefit of a snorkel is that the air will possibly be cooler and therefore denser by picking it up higher in the fresh air, however I don't think that it often out-weighs the hosepipe thing, but am happy to be proven wrong!

With a diesel it is always worth giving it a good thrash before the MOT, if it hasn't been used for a bit it could be a bit smoky.

There are additives that you can use to help with the test if all else fails.
