I've just had an almost identical experience with my T/diesel van - I was alol set for an engine rebuild, but that little voice made me check the flow through the radiator - virtually zero.  New rad cured it - but why it was blocked I've no idea, as it's always had plenty of  antifreeze.  

Might be worth putting a hose through it (unless you've been offroad and its full of mud on the outside....)

Im shamed to say that the disco hasnt got muddy for a while, so the rad is ok. I flushed everything through with the garden hose too when i changed all the other bits and bobs. I filled via the point in the top of the stat housing, doesnt fill very well from the header tank.

Booked it in today to the local garage, who are going to take a look - they thought it may be a cylinder head.
