Gearbox clunk??

(1/2) > >>

tjsj:
Hi there I found a disco which i may be getting and he says that there is a clunk when taking up drive. Am I right in saying that this is the spline and if so is it easy to fit a new one and how much will it cost??

Cheers :o

both my disco's have done this, i think its cos there is a slight ammount of play in the drive train, i.e. the prop will always have a minimal ammount of play no matter how good a mechanic you are.  All depends on how heavy and loud and the force of the clunk.

petergalileo:
Its supposed to be the splined shaft between the gearbox and transfer box, theres a modified one available from somewhere that has a drilling to allow oil to the plines to lubricate them.  Mines been doing it for 3 years now.  Shortly changing to an auto and changing transfer box for a newer one so hopefully it will cure it.

lrmike:
If its a high milage truck there can be play built up all through the driveline from the hub flanges (front only on the disco) to the spiders, pinion lash, t-case and t-case input flange (which was an issue).
Mines been clunking since I've owned it, going on 5 years now, and so far still goes.  It all depends on how bad / hard it is.
I believe it's a pretty big job to change the input shaft.

Mark2Disco:
only worry if the heater dont work
everything else is easy to change
