has anyone made a snorkel for a disco tdi. diy and with what bits

I fancied having a go at a diy one, something out of stainless steel, so I could practice the old mig welding

Is it just the gas and wire that are different for SS?

more or less, but with tig you can adjust the weld temp independently to  to suit the rate your filling at so you dont scorch the stainless. Good article on it here..
