3.5 v8, dont know what that pipe is

mark.yellow.series.3:
there is a right angle pipe (approx 3/8 bore) sticking out of the back of the block (in the 'v' part) just above where the bell housing joins. is this a breather? ive got know idea.

A pic would help ! I think its to do with the cooling system, i could be wrong tho !

hiya if you mean the metal right angle sticking out of the back of the block
on the drivers side on the engine it is indeed the engine breather system
(inlet) on a carbed engine and should be connected via a bit of rubber hose
to the bottom of the air box.

this inlet is absent on an efi block and is replaced by a small filter/inlet on the
back end of the passanger side rocker cover

iam not using an air cleaner box under the bonnet, what should i use instead.

if you have a snorkle you can run a bit of pipe up the side just as
you would with extended axle breathers
if not just run it as high and dry/clean as possible
remember this inlet feeds air in to the block and as such
it needs to be as clean as possible there are tiny KnN style
filters avalable from performance shops to do just this job
