LOST DRIVE
Jimbo:
When the S and M lights flash it indicates that an 'error' has occured within the auto box (or its ECU) - the box should go into 'limp home' mode, which IIRC locks the box in 3rd....!!!!! Not a lot of use if you're stuck on a steep hill. I had this happen 3 times, but still had some drive - on each occasion I left the truck off for 30mins or more (took the dog for a walk), and the problem self-cleared. Took it into the stealers (was still under warranty), they cleared the codes - and said it was nothing to worry about
I've just had mine serviced, and it makes a huge difference to the way the auto box behaves having the oil changed - even though the LR service schedule says to change it every 24k miles, I get it done at every service (12k miles).........definitely worth getting the oil changed, and (unless you know when it was last done), get the oil filter in the auto box changed as well.

LADY IN A LANDY:
Thanks for the advice, is changing the filter an easy job for my local garage or do i need to take it to a dealer/specalist
Spooky:
It is possible do it yourself (as I have), but it can be a little messy, as the gearbox drips fluid seemingly forever ...
FYI, the L-R numbers for the required parts are:
Auto filter - RTC4653 - £25.70
Sump gasket - RTC4268 - £8.77
'O' seal - RTC4276 - 81 pence
'O' seal - RTC5818 - £1.16
Drain plug washer - STC1060 - £1.92
You will also need about a gallon of Dexron II ATF.
The above prices are Ex VAT, and do not include any discount you may be able to negotiate with your Stealer.
The biggest secret (apart from making SURE that the car is SAFE before you crawl under it) is cleanliness; it is essential that NO dirt finds its way into the transmission.
LADY IN A LANDY:
Thanks Spooky, thats a great help if i can get the parts together i might havea go this weekend myself rather than go to the garage with it.
I think i can probably wriggle under without having to lift the car
Xtremeteam:
the filler/level plug is on the front of the gearbox sump & "might" take a good 10+ litres to top it back up to its corect level depending on how low it has got before you have changed the oil & filter
