...that when you write the address on a parcel, there's a tendency to scale the size of the writing to the size of the parcel?

So when you're addressing an envelope, you use normal writing and a biro...  When you're addressing a big box, you use a fat marker pen and write it large.

Is this because the postal staff who handle parcels have less good eyesight than the ones who handle letters?  :?

strapping young lad:
big letters wont fit on the envelope and small writing will look silly on packages

i use word to print one off them stick it on the parcel

cos my handwriting is poo (not literally like that old woman on little britain! ;) )

TimM:
We probably assume the postmen (or are they postperson's now?) are nearly blind so we write as big as the package lets us, but we are forced to write small on little envelopes and we just have to hope we get a postie who can see

Neil Jones:
Imagine you buy a pack of blu-tac and a crate of beer from the supermarket.  The bar code on the blu-tac is always easy for the cashier to find, whereas the bar code on the crate is not so easy to find.  I guess its a similar thing here, as the post office staff are in a rush, a small address is easy to find on an envelope, whereas a small address on a large package is not so easy to find.  Maybe thats the reason

hobbit:
The address is incidental really, as long as they can focus on the post code that is the main thing they want to see, after that the nouse number or name

Even on letters I always make sure that the postcode is clear, usually twice the size of the address
