Tinkling chain-type noise ?

<< < (4/4)

Jimbo:
OK, have been grovelling around under the Disco - other than the usual oil leaks, all seems ok. No signs of the exhaust starting to blow, the exhaust doesn't seem to be touching anything it shouldn't, and no heat shields appear to be loose, but:

There's a couple of big steel 'donuts' ? on a rubber bush on the front of the rear diff, and linking the bolt that secures the bush is a wire cable, about 8" long the other end of which attaches to another bolt on the top of the diff - it's almost like a safety cable to stop the donuts from falling off if the bolt comes undone. Well, this wire/cable thing only loops around the securing bolts, so its loose - and making the noise I can hear.

What is this cable ?
Is it an important part ?
Can I take it off ?
What are the two bug donuts on the diff for ?

Ta,

Jim

Hightower:
Jim,

The big donut things are dampers to stop vibration through the drivetrain.
The cable is exactly as you describe - a safety feature to stop the donuts killing somebody when the bolt undoes itself.
Short answer, yes, you can take the donuts off, but you may risk getting a bit of vibration.
You could always just cable tie the safety cable down so it's not rattling around.

Cheers
