steering box leaking
beast5680:
my 300tdi steering box has been leaking for a while but now is quite bad, is it worth trying to fit a new seal to it where the drop arm is or go for a new/recon box?
how difficult is the seal to replace if i go down that route?
kevbutty:
The drop arm seal kit is only a couple of quid and is easy to fit if you have the special tools required
If not its probably better to fit a recon box (approx £130) which will have years guarantee with it.
beast5680:
by special tools do we mean pullers to get the arm off? i like cheap fix at the minute as i,m skint
kevbutty:
You can get the arm off with a big hammer, you may need to remove the steering box to hit it hard enough :?
The special tools are required to fit the seal which is an extremely tight fit. There is a tube which fits over the splined haft to stop the seal getting damaged & a tool to drive the seal in.
In my experience there is a 75% chance of fixing the leak with a seal kit.
BigA:
just to add my bit....... i could not get the drop arm off of my 90 steering box, puller, hammer, swearing, would not move, but i guess they must come off. In the end I went for a replacement steering box, as i was informed by far too many people that the seal would only go again once fixed anyhow.
I did buy a seal kit for the 90, and i may still have it in the garage, not sure if it will be any good to you, but if you are interested PM me and i will post it to you if i still have it.
