Too true....my Canon MVX200i is a great bit of kit but I still can't see how I can connect the camcorder to my firewire port on the PC !!!!! I've a mini jack plug and a mini-usb. Stuffed me thinks !!!!

For those without fireware or usb on the camera ANY TV-Tuner card with a composite or Svideo input will do the job.  My old Sony Handycam connects to my Hauppage WinTV card this way and I capture and chop up my videos without any problems.

I run Gentoo Linux, so I cant comment on any of the windows packages.
