Good Ideas?
dew1911:
Bit of Background first, I'm 16, 17 In November and am looking for my first car to aquire in around July/Aug this year, to allow time to do any work that may need doing before I learn.
To start with, I was just looking at a C Reg Defender 110 19J, Nice Car, Painted a bad colour but other than that very nice, asking £2000, which is right at the top end of my budget.
Now, Browsing Autotrader this morning I found Early 3dr 200TDi Disco's can be had for around £1300-£1500, which seems to make more sense to me.
What I'm asking is, does a Disco make good sense as a first car or Should I avoid at all costs? I know insurance may be an issue, but I have a couple of methods that could help that a little.
v8kenny:
Insurance will be your biggest issue at your age - get a couple of quotes for a disco and a 90/110 and see the difference
Also at your age do you really want to be seen driving a "girly" car - defenders are soooo much cooler

Yes a Very Large part of me does want a Defender, but a good part also sees the sense in spending £500 less on a Nice Discovery and doing it up instead.
Also, The Disco would be better on road (where it would be about 85% of the time) and probobly a lot less likley to go boom on me.
At the end I'm at a divide here, and I was just looking for a little guidence.

I agree the disco would be better on the road but they are capable of going "boom" just as much (if not more) than a defender and will probably be dearer to fix when they do
Defenders are easier to work on yourself and new/second hand parts are easier to get and cheaper - something worth considering if you have a limited budget
As for price - take your time and shop around and remember with 90/110's condition is far more important than age (come to think of it that applies to discos too) - I just picked up a cracking 110 truck cab pick up with new canvas for £1450 so they are out there

It might be an idea to get yourself out to a meetup of some kind, be it Mud-Club, GLASS or any other 4x4 club, nad see if you can get a few rides in different vehicles.
You will find that Discos can handle just about as much off road as a Defender, and you will do it in far more comfort in the process
Mine is used daily and I have heat in the winter, air-con for the summer, no leaks, less noise, leather seats etc........
But off road, you'd expect it to suffer, but it doesn't seem too
I'd say go for the Disco, it's the thinking mans defender (steps back and awaits abuse), but you must make your own descision, and I think you can only get that through spending some time around them.
:D
