Wading plugs

If wading deep, wading plugs should be fitted to bellhousings on manual gearboxes to protect the clutch and timing belt covers on TDIs to protect the timing belt from water entering.

They should not be fitted permanently, but stored with the tools and fitted when wading or off roading with possibility of wading. If they are fitted permanently, they should be taken out regularly to allow oil etc. to be drained.

They are 1/4" BSP brass plugs, and are used for plugging pipes when removing radiators or other plumbing work. To be found cheap at any plumbing- or pipe fitting store. Buy three of them, and you can drill the third one to accept a drill for locking flywheel when renewing timing belt!

Natt...........i have two plugs for ya and wil see you at langdale.
The size is 3/8th's BSP.

If I go through a ford occasionally wil I need to fit them? Mine is also an auto. does that have a breather?
