Supacat Mk II
« on: January 11, 2006, 19:47:27 »
Hi

I'm a relatively new member and thought I'd post a few pics of my vehicle.

I aquired it a year ago from Whitham Specialist Vehicles, after reading about the MOD cockup and waste of money when they sold them, bought them back, refurbished them, sent them to the Gulf, only to return unused and then have to be sold again!

It has a 1.6 litre VW diesel engine mated to a 3 speed auto gearbox.  The centre axle is driven by shaft drive and the two outer axles are chain driven.

Its road legal but with a top speed of under 30mph, its not the best vehicle to travel any distance in!

Off road it is excellent but its Achilles heal is ground clearance - it has no suspension and you have to be careful not to ground it.

We make bits for them, now put together by DML in Plymouth, Supacat do all the development work. The HMT is even better, runs rings around the Pinzinara (sorry not spelt right), 4x4 with air bag ride height adjustment, one of the prototypes had a GMC 6.5 V8 turbo diesel in it, god it sounded good, and went like stink. Cant wait for them to become surplus.

It was a failed climb further up and I bellied out.  Got a tow backwards but it was rather enthusiastic and by the time I had stopped I was near the edge.

Although there is no point in going offroad if you are not going to try and push the envelope

Well Steve, its the old saying, if they told me where they fit, they would have to shoot me.
But most of the bits we do go on the HMT, and just odd brackets on the MK2.

MkII definitely has the enclosed ramps in the sides.  They are quite fiddly to get out - the R clips on the pins have restricted access; and last time I tried to use they, they were "concreted" in where the mud had got in and set.

I am a sponge for details and info on these vehicles so if you have any photos I would love to see them  :D .

I have just tried an enquiry at the Royal Logistics Corps Museum, but unfortunately they did not have the record card for my vehicle, despite me having 2 separate military registrations for it

I can quite honestly say I've never seen that driving around the Pontefract area, & I go there fairly regularly.

Looks like damn good fun though

I'm looking at fitting some packing/ammo cases to the rear wings to store things in whilst offroad.  I want to be able to demount them quickly and have been looking around at possible solutions.

So far this idea appeals to me most:

with the locking feet being mounted to the underside of the ammo cases.  It should take the weight as they are designed for the big heavy Engels fridges.

Anyone got any thoughts or alternative suggestions?

<BTM drags this topic 'kicking & screaming' into the daylight>

I spotted this fine vehicle on Saturday afternoon  on Lumley Street in Hightown (Castleford), near the marked 'Hospital'

I was in the 110, so got a wave in response to my flashed headlamps & own wave.

Driver & passenger were both 'begoggled', as it was probably a blustery trip

Still looked like fun though

It looks not unlike an Argo Cat - now those are a hoot. I've driven an older cable-braked example which was much the same as the descriptions of this thing.
