The load rating is per tyre. The weight of the vehicle is spread over the number of tyres on the vehicle.
It's not quite as simple as diving by 4 (or 6 if you are David), because the axle weights will be different. But you get the idea.

the tyres mentioned above give a value of around 4 tonnes assuming you have four of them, does this mean that with a disco being around 2, they're fine and dandy...
with due consideration to the fact that it's a *very* rough measure should teh answer not be double the weight of the vehicle ?

As a rough guide, yes. Don't forget, you need to calculate on the maximum allowable weight of the vehicle... just the same as with the speed ratings
