Will keep them on for 'local' stuff, but if i travel further, say Whaddon for example, I'll drive up on my road tyres I think

Doesn't matter how fast you drive... it about how fast your vehicle is *capable* of driving according to the manufacturer. If your tyres are not rated for the vehicle you are potentially breaking the law and will have no insurance.
Have a look here for a bit of info.. http://members.mud-club.com/library/?articleid=22

Mmm, cheers for the list, very interesting reading.
Bit confused now though.
The 'diamond' tread remoulds are 'M' rated, which the list says 81mph limit. The tyres say 87M. Is the '87' the limit or does that mean something else?
The Niva top speed is 'supposed' to be 85mph (yeah right, downhill with a rocket pack on the roof rack maybe!) so would I be within the law if the limit of the tyres is only 81?
Also, I used to have some 'Maxi Cross' tyres quite a few years ago on a Niva, AWESOME tyres, but at the time were rated at 30mph, had them on for three years, went through 3 MOT's, AND was stopped by the police for a 'slightly' noisy exhaust.(boys racers eh!! )
Now surely if the tyres were rated that low then it should have failed the MOT and the police should've picked up on it too??

The 87 is the load rating. The M is the speed rating. 87 is 545Kgs. As with speed ratings, the load rating should match the maximum weight of the vehicle. So, these ought to be OK on yours. (4 x 545 = 2.1 tonnes)

Technically an 81 mph tyre wouldn't be legal.

They will pick it up if they want to. Insurance assessors are on the lookout for such things now, and the danger is if you are ever in a prang and the Police / Insurance get involved..... even if someone else hits you.
Aside from that, they are a lot more aware of the regulations than they used to be...... the days of knowing more loopholes than the average plod are a distance memory.
