Clutch woes

(1/2) > >>

drmike:
Hi guys

Chug, chug down to Devon cruising in the Disco at 70 come off M5 after 90 miles or so and the gear change has become very stiff. Much grating of gears from now on, very stiff changes but it always works.

On arrival I look underneath and inside for signs of fluid loss but the reservoir is full, and there's no obvious sign of fluid loss underneath but it was raining etc.

All the way home it was much the same but variable sometimes really bad other times OK.

Immediate thoughts were

Master/slave cylinders but wouldn't that involve fluid loss
Clutch doesn't slip so not likely to be worn clutch anyway symptoms wrong
It's that ruddy release fork thing!
Otherwise it could dumped some/all gearbox oil. The box did get hot but then I think on a 3 hour run it would just from engine heat.

No odd noises but when I release the clutch there's a rattly rumbly noise and when it's depressed rather like I am there's none. That's the thrust bearing failing isn't it?

I don't think this is going to be DIY!

Any thoughts?

Mike

if your clutch pedal is ok it sounds like the clutch is dragging slightly, which may well be a thrust bearing starting to go from the noise you describe

hobbit:
Might be worth checking/ changing the gear oil first

drmike:
I have put the difflock oil in about 12k ago but I think I'll drain it and see what comes out.

Thrust bearing is engine out job isn't it? In which I have to say I think I'd pay the small fortune and replace the gearbox as I have a massive clonk in it.

hobbit:
The rattle is more than likely clutch related, thrust bearing, fork etc, but mines been like that for 28 months now, so not to worried

The clunking on the pick up and decelaration, may not be the transfer box, could be the diff(s), or prop shaft etc, down the drive line

Same as the oil, transfer box, gearbox, and diffs dip check on the level hole, unless you know they are overdue, if they were changed recently and not has been used heavily they should be on, just check the condition of the oils
