davidlandy:
How do I go about making my own home electro-plating kit?

looking to coat metal brackets etc...... zinc? gold passivate?

Sheddy:
Nickel plating is easy ... and rustproof.  I used to do motorcycle bits with it.  Black nickel is prettyer!

davidlandy:
ok,  so how do you do it?

You'll need a plastic bowl, some nickel salts, a 12v battery and a way of regulating the current.  You can do it without regulatingthe current but if the voltage is too high the finish wont be so good.

The finish will only be as good as the preparation of the item to be plated, any scratches and digs in the item will beaccentuated by plating them.  This is because you get better current flow on edges of metal, so you get thicker plating there.  scratches have edges, so they show up mor after plating.

Dilute the nickel salts in distilled water.  Connect the positive side of the battery to the donor cathode and the negative side (after running it through the voltage regulator) to the item to be plated.  Put the positive side into the solution first and the ...... oh sod it ... buy the book and be safer!!
