300TDi - Defender 90 or Discovery

(1/2) > >>

stefan:
Hello,

I'm thinking of selling my MG ZT and becoming a 2 Land Rover owner! I'm thinking of either a Defender 90 County 300TDi or a Discovery (ES) 300TDi (don't want a TD5 as I intend to do general servicing myself). I already have a 1988 90 which is used more for the off-road side of things. The new one will maybe do a little green laning (fed up with scratches as per my previous Disco's), but mainly be used as daily runner for work.

Now here's my thinking:-

The Defender will:-

1) Hold it's residual value better

2) Have better economy

3) Be more fun to drive

4) Slightly cheaper to maintain?

5) Have more street cred!

The Discovery will:-

1) Be more comfortable

2) Have more toys

3) Be much bigger and convenient if I need to carry stuff

So what's everyone else's thoughts and preferences?

Go for the Disco.

You already have an off-road toy.  Keep the Disco in road-biased trim and use it as a daily driver.  More practical than a 90 for that.

The third option is to get a 110.  The fun of the 90, the size of the Disco :-)

My 2p worth.

Ollie:
Defender, either way. Go for the 110 if size is an issue
I've had my 90 300TDi for a month now, gone from a 3 Series BMW, no regrets, love it :D

Cheers.
Ollie.
ps. My wife and I drove the Discovery, new, a few months ago, and I'm probably going to stir some strong feelings, but we both thought the drive wasn't very good, sorry chaps.

stefan:
I have to say I am leaning towards the Defender, had 2 Discovery's and they are just not the same fun as a Defender........................ if you are going to go from 'all the toys' to 'basic', it's best not to settle in the middle!!

I'm stuck with a Disco due to my............. er........... well....
expansive frame.
I can't drive a 90 without the windows open and then it's claustrophobic.
Now when they do a Defender with more room in the cab.....
