Xtremeteam:
V8's have a timing chain
also check for regular ooil changes as if it hasnt been changed regularly can cause problems on the V8s with worn cams
Dave:
Don't now much about the engine side of it but look for rot. Inner wings, sills, rear boot floor, rear cross member, all brackets on the axels ie were the springs fit and round the diff pan. and round the front lights.
All can be fixed but at a cost
Also just feel for any slack in the drive train, check the steering box is not leaking.
Bulli:
As Mike says , fairly high mileage that though(for the year) Most 200/300 tdi have lunar milage but a lot of v8's are much less....due to the cost of running them.
Oil changes are vital-older oil often gets burnt onto the valley and causes contamination which lead to problems with the cam and followers.
Have a look at the boot floor as they rust like mad. check the inner wings aswell. Chassis should be sound at that age.
good luck
