More trouble this morning when Turtle wouldn't start (once again) The alternator light starting flashing very dimly on Sunday after a run in the clay pit at Tixover.

In phoning around I manage to find a company called MKS who supplied a new alternator for £39 and then fitted it for another £30 which I didn't think was too bad, as most companies I talked to wanted between £55 and £70 for a new unit,

The guy arrived and when he removed the old one he said it was a 45amp unit and I should have at least a 70 amp fitted. So I did have 70 amp fitted for an extra £5.

But the question is does anyone know what the correct amperage should be for a 300TDi 45amps or 70 amps?

mine is a 65amp,  - 45 is low , I believe that goodie-loaded discos are 100amp

mine is made by magnetti marelli

I know all this because when I went to Tixover I killed it, the light was staying on - so I took it to fastline parts in kettering who fitted a new brush pack for £25. - been ok since

only took a few mins to fit back on

This chap this morning took about a hour to swap over the alternators, I didn’t mind as I was in the warm watching through the window. Poor [!Expletive Deleted!] as it was snowing at the time. I did take him out a cuppa and allowed him to use the loo.   :D

I was just wondering what the correct amps should be, as I had the motor for nearly two years on the same alternator so I now found out running on low amps, this could be the cause of my electrical problems and running the winch?

So 65amps and above is correct?

Guess what? Mines playing up too, the alternator light stays on at start up until I blip the throttle. Should mine be 65 amps+ too as mines just a poor old NAD ? Maybe I should consider an upgrade anyway with all the gizmos I'll eventually fit.

The guys I used were MKS Aeronautical & Automobile Engineers (01908) 225494

£34 for the alternator and £30 to fit did it on the drive (so to speak :D ) saved me getting cold.

Took him about an hour, was the cheapest I could find in MK as I was quoted between £55 and £70 elsewhere. Give them a ring.
