need advice on bizarre starting and stopping problem
« on: November 05, 2005, 10:50:56 »
Hello Dirk here looking for anyone who has had a similar problem.
When i turn the ignition key nothing happens, the dials all get power to them but the engine does not start. If i leave it for about 10 mins and try again the engine starts first time, also when i then turn the engine off i can remove the key and the engine still runs....
Am i on the right tracks thinking the ignition barrel is knackered as when trying to start it i cant hear the solenoid, starter motor kicking in and i dont think the starter motor is jammed.
any thoughts would be welcomed.
I am off to change the breake shoes and wheel cylinders now lucky me
Cheers Dirk

I dont know about on a series landrover but on a normal (aka boring) car I would have guessed at ignition switch?  Is there a switch behind the barel on these?

Oh and good luck with shoes / wheel cylinders thats my fun task for the morning! :(

If it is a diesel you choudl be able to pull the key out with the engine running, however in doing so it turns the electrics off, this includes the alternator etc, so not a advised.

If it is running with the ignition off, it could be the engine is now due for a decoke.

Petrol or diesel  :?:

For Petrol:
for over run
Does the engine run hot,
Is the timing set correctly
Is the engine running very lean
How difficult is it to live with

As for the time delay in the starter,

1 Find friend with multi meter and test for power throughout the starting circutes, starting at input to solenoid and working way to starter.
When the starter isn't turning and you are trying to start on the key, check to see how far power gets.

I would suspect that the solenoid is probably knackered.

a very common problem is over tightening the power lead to the starter and turning the peg which breaks the connection in side (knackered starter).

For Diesel - REPLACE WITH PETROL ENGINE
