Range Rover Blues:
The 'seal' is a soft metal bearing that is just a good fit. There are 2 bearings (or bushes) and the indicator hole is between the two so you know when the seal has begun to fail. It's lubricated by the coolant which is why adding anti freeze is a good idea (contains glycol) although this reducing surface tension so adding it to a worn pump will often lead directly to the pump leaking.
Rover group are notoriously expensive for the price of water pumps, about 10 years ago my mate had to do his TR7 and it cost over £50 for the overhaul kit, a new pump was over a ton.
