Rear winch mount?

(1/3) > >>

RedDisco:
Are there any rear winch bumpers / mounts available for Discos, I've looked round the usual places but can't see any.

Anyone fabricated their own, I'd be interested to see pic's.

Thanks.

Wanderer:
I've only ever seen a couple of rear mounted winches on Discos.

The problem comes with the fact that the rear cross member is directly behind the bumper. Behind the crossmember is the fuel tank.

So it's a case of mounting the winch behind the cross member and then moving the fuel tank elsewhere.

I've got a removable tow hitch and I'm thinking of using the receiver to allow me to be able to put a winch on there after I've got stuck to get me out.

But the downside is that if there's not enough room when stuck I may not be able to put it on.
With it on you'd lose to much angle on the rear.

It'd take some nifty work but you could mount it in the rear loadspace and bring a roller fairlead through the back door. I don't know that the back door would take the strain of a winch pulling on the side of the fairlead though.

TimM:
I've not got a winch and haven't used one before, so please excuse me if this is a stupid suggestion:

Would it be possible to fabricate a frame to mount a descent winch in, that would/could be attached to the vehicle (using a wire/chain) by jate rings or other recovery points.

I'm then visualising a single winch that could be attached to the front, rear, or even the sides and would be stored when not used in the boot (not reducing any approach angles etc).

Should I go on..........

Or is this sounding stupid?

Budgie:
Marshland's do a rear recovery system for the Disco that will allow a removable winch to be mounted to the front or rear of the vehicle. ;)

But, as Andy-T says in the Modified Forum, have you tried to lift a winch & mount onto a vehicle!  :?

chuggaman:
