P38 4.6 into 1990 Discovery

Skippy:
Can anybody shed any light on what i will need to do to the GEMS management system on a 4.6 V8 in order to override all the stuff like the immobiliser, gearbox etc that would normally be connected to it when i install it into my Disco?

The Hotwire injection system on my 3.9 was quite easy as its not really that smart but i suppose the GEMS system will throw a fit if i try and run it without some software/hardware mods!!

Cheers

Hasn't Neil ('Thrasher') got a 4.6 in Piglet?, but presumably GEM-free??

Ask him.

Skippy:
Cheers, but ideally i would like to keep the GEMS if i can find some kind of override system.  The idea of this is that it gives me more control than my hotwire injection.

I know someone who put one in a 90 ;-)

Your two main jobs are to decipher the wiring loom so you can work out where to stick power and ground connections....   and you need to defeat the 'Robust Security' on the ECU.   It is designed so that it is usually in constant communication with the body electronics control module (BECM).   The BECM handles the alarm systems and sends signals back to the engine for air con boost, etc.

You can go to someone like Rpi who can supply you with replacement EPROMs for the ECU with this disabled...  the other option is to get down and dirty with an eprom programmer ;-)

The GEMS engine works well in the vehicle though...   just keeps smiling even underwater ;-)

Skippy:
Cheers Tim, that what i wanted to hear!!  I was contemplating going for an aftermarket ECU from somone like emerald but i would prefer to keep with the GEMS. I will give them a call in the morning.

What was the 4.6 like in the 90  :D
